The importance of doing 'buddy checks' when climbing is invaluable. How many climbers still do thorough checks EVERY time? Who's ever had a near miss?

Human errors like not tieing your knot correctly or not locking your screwgate, are easily avoided.

Don't get distracted. Don't get lazy. @jolie_linda_77 and James from @landandwave Winter Trainee course this week continuing their checks to ensure they can focus on their routes.

Coaching outside at this time of year, with winter knocking at our door, it requires a degree of optimism, good weather forecast reading and knowing your crags!

This week we spent 4-days working with Jennifer and Arnaud on buliding confidence in climbing. Focusing on developing their understanding of movement and biomachanics. Spending as much time as possible on real rock, we ventured out to Ansteys Cove to work on their Sport climbing skills, as well as Chudleigh Rocks and the #Dewerstone for some trad time.

A couple of sessions at @tchplymouth and @dynoclimbingcentre allowed us to escape the rain for a few hours until it cleared enough for us to head back outside.

Dorset has such a range of accesible grades and crags- something Devon simply cannot offer. Its worth the visit during your first steps into climbing when learning the ropes.

This is my third session working with Jana. It's been fantastic to see the positive changes in movement, techniques, skill and confidence.

3 fantastic days working on @garlandmountaineering R.C.I this week in sunny Devon. We managed to dodge almost all the rain and crammed as much learning in as possible. Having 4 women attend the course was refreshing, and goes against the normal statistics, when it comes to most @mtntraining courses. Female participation is still underrepresented across most outdoor sports but it is changing. It was exciting to support delivering this course.

What a lush weekend at Ansteys Cove. As one of the few (and personal favourite) sport climbing crag in the area, it was great to see the fantastic bunch turn up. Getting stuck in and clearing up rubbish from under rocks and behind bushes.

Thanks for making it worth while guys, all your hard sweaty effort, and hopefully see you in autumn when I'm looking to orgnaise another #beachcleanup

The Wall to Crag 1-day course yesterday at Chudleigh was so much fun. We dodged the morning rain and introduced some gear placements and seconding skills and top-rope set-ups, before putting it into practice on some adventurous routes.

Building confidence and testing their gear placements, Sarah and Rebecca got stuck in from the word go.

Belay glasses...a gimmick, a saviour, a risk? Ab

Belay glasses...a gimmick, a saviour, a risk?

About 8 years ago these were a rare sighting (no pun intended) at the crag.
As an avid wearer in my personal climbing, especially when belaying my partners on their projects, I still get occasional comments on how they must increase risks.

Worn appropriately and following a few basic steps, we believe belay glasses can make belaying a more enjoyable, neck-pain free experience (and obviously make you look cool at the crag!) 😉

Things to consider...

1. If new to belay glasses, try using them in a lower stress environment like an indoor wall and whilst bottom rope belaying. Familarise yourself with the view and how they affect your peripheral vision.

2. Do your buddy checks prior to putting glasses on. Keeping the glasses on your nose until your climber is past the 3rd bolt can help to be vigilant when there is a higher risk of a ground fall.

3. Be familiar with your belay environment and use the string around your neck... active belaying should still be implemented.
